Do you have only 24 hours in Skopje? This quirky, underrated capital of North Macedonia packs a surprising punch for a one-day stopover. Skopje is anything but ordinary! Whether you’re passing through on a Balkan backpacking route or hopping in from nearby cities like Ohrid or Thessaloniki, this compact city offers a mix of history, culture, and kitsch—perfectly doable in a day. In this guide, you’ll find a thoughtfully curated itinerary to help you make the most of your 24 hours in Skopje, with local food stops and must-see sights.
How to get to Skopje
Skopje is easily accessible by air, bus, or train. The international airport (SKP) is just 25 minutes from the city center and served by budget airlines like Wizz Air. Direct buses connect Skopje to major Balkan cities like Pristina, Sofia, and Thessaloniki. If you’re coming from within North Macedonia, frequent buses connect Skopje with cities like Ohrid and Bitola.

24 hours in Skopje – one day itinerary
Morning
Start your morning with a traditional breakfast; burek! In all honesty: we love burek at any time of the day; but it is truly a breakfast dish in the Balkans. The best one in the city center is Record Burek.
Once your stomach is full; head to Skopje’s old bazaar. The cobble stone streets and traditional shops are very charming and very picturesque! With all its pretty coffee shops and boutiques, you’re bound to find something you’ll like. We personally loved the shops selling communist antiques and the silver shops.
Mustafa Pasha Mosque is often skipped by visitors, but well worth a visit. It sits just above the old town, and is one of the largest Ottoman mosques of Macedonia. We were stopped multiple times by people telling us bits and pieces of its history and upcoming events that were clearly very proud. Don’t forget to have a look at the rose gardens as well!
From here, it’s a short walk to the Church of the Ascension of Jesus. In the back of the very serene garden, you will find the actual church with centuries old frescoes framed in hand carved wood. Or, you could make your way to Daut Pasha Hamam, an old Turkish bath house that now serves as the National Art Gallery.

Midday
Hungry yet? You can’t leave Skopje without having cevapi, or kebabs! Lunch at Kebapcilnica Rio 1990 or 7 Skara Restaurant.
While you’re there, have a look at all the statues on Macedonia Square, and you could visit Mother Teresa’s birth house.
Afternoon
Explore Debar Maalo, Skopje’s ‘hipster’ neighborhood. This historic area is quite green and is full of good restaurants, the best coffee bar in Macedonia ( The Dude Specialty Coffee) and fun shops. We really liked the vibes here, and it shows a different side of Skopje.
You could visit the city park to wind down a bit, or visit the National Theatre or the Museum of Contemporary Art.
If you choose to have lunch here instead (or dinner), we did so at Shopski Merak. Their lamb is fantastic!
Depending on your time; you could opt to add a sunset trip to your itinerary. Take a taxi to the Millennium Cross cable car station, and ride up the mountain for a beautiful view over the city. The ride takes 5 minutes and costs 100 Dinar.

Evening
We enjoyed our evening at Macedonia square and watched the city go by. After dinner (you could dine at Pelister on the square should you fancy something other than Macedonian food) head back to the old Bazaar for some evening drinks!
Old Town Brewery has a nice outdoor area and does local beer tastings; enjoy the local rakijia at Rakija Bar Kaldrma or enjoy a few cocktails at The Artist.
Where to stay in Skopje
→ We stayed at Aparthotel Waldinger, which is a quirky hotel right in the middle of the city. Some rooms even have a jacuzzi, and you can’t beat the price!
→ Hotel Arka is a beautiful hotel right in the old bazaar, with swimming pool and a rooftop bar. Perfect if you’re looking to splurge.
24 hours in Skopje: FAQ
Is Skopje walkable?
Absolutely! We did not take a taxi once and walked everywhere. Except to go to the cable car, you won’t need one either.
Is 24 hours enough in Skopje?
We always prefer to stay longer; but if you’re short on time then yes, you can experience Skopje in 24 hours and cover all the main sights without problem.
How should I dress?
If you’re visiting mosques and churches you need to dress modestly, meaning having your shoulders and knees covered. This goes for men as well. In the city’ you can dress how you like!
From Ottoman charm to concrete giants, mountain views to riverside cafés, Skopje delivers more than meets the eye. We hope this itinerary helps you make the most of your short stay—and if it did, don’t forget to share it or save it for later!
