Tucked away in the heart of North Macedonia, Ohrid is one of those rare places that still feels like a secret. While most travelers flock to big-name European cities, Ohrid offers lakeside serenity, ancient history, and local charm, all without the crowds. It’s got that magical mix of culture, nature, and warm hospitality that makes you fall in love with this Balkan country. If you’re into old towns, local food, and discovering a place beyond the tourist trail, this 3-day itinerary will help you experience Ohrid like a local. Trust us; once you’ve watched the sun set behind a centuries-old church on the lake, you’ll never want to leave!
How to get to Ohrid
While Ohrid does have an airport; it is tiny and serviced by only a few European cities. Flying into Skopje will give you a lot more flexibility. Bus services to Ohrid run well and the journey takes about 2 hours. Check your tickets here.

What is the best time to come to Ohrid?
The best time for Ohrid is either just before summer, in May and June, or just after in late August and September. At this time the weather is pleasant, and the European summer holiday hasn’t started yet (or is just finished) which means it isn’t so busy.
The summer months are very crowded in Ohrid. It definitely shouldn’t stop you from going if those are the dates you’re free to travel, and it will still be a charming place, but everything will take a bit more time!
Planning a 3-day North Macedonia itinerary?
If you’re short on time, basing yourself in Ohrid is one of the best ways to experience the country. Here’s how we’d spend those three days!
Ohrid like a local: 3 day itinerary
Day 1 – old town, history & sunset views
Morning
Wander around the cobbled streets of Ohrid’s old town and enjoy the lakeside vibes! Don’t forget to include the church of Saint Sophia, which is one of the most important churches of North Macedonia and has undergone many changes over the centuries. You might also spot some tortoises wandering the grounds!
Also stop by the ancient theatre of Ohrid, dating back to 200 B.C. Only discovered in the 20th century, and only the bottom part has been preserved. Nowadays, it’s also an event space.
Afternoon
After a nice outdoor lunch at restaurant St. Sofija, head up to Samuel’s Fortress. This is where you will find the best views over the old town and the lake!
Towering above the old town, Samuel’s Fortress is one of Ohrid’s most impressive historical sites. Originally built during late antiquity and later expanded by Tsar Samuel of the First Bulgarian Empire in the 10th century, the fortress turned Ohrid into a powerful medieval capital. Its thick stone walls and strategic hilltop position once protected the city from Byzantine invasions.
Then, head down to Plaošnik to visit the church of Saints Clement. This orthodox church was built on the foundations of the old church, which can still be seen inside, as well as beautifully preserved mosaics and artwork.
Evening
Come sunset, visit the church of St John at Kaneo and enjoy the sunset. The tiny inside of the church is just that, tiny, but it’s also one of the most beautiful churches we’ve been in. The view over the lake from here are also, you guessed it, stunning.
End the day with dinner at Kaneo restaurant, which is lakeside, and enjoy an evening with fresh fish and wine.

Day 2 – day trip & beach
Morning
Day 2 is the perfect day for a day trip! Today, get a boat tour and sail across the lake to visit Sveti Naum. The views from the water on the mountains and villages are beautiful.
Sveti Naum is a stunning monastery on the southern shores of Lake Ohrid, near the Albanian border. Founded in the 10th century by Saint Naum himself, a disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the monastery is not only a place of deep spiritual significance but also a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature. There are beautiful courtyards (with peacocks!) to explore; you could take a small boat trip to the springs or admire the frescoes inside the church.
→ Book your boat trip to Sveti Naum
Afternoon
Either have your lunch at Sveti Naum, there are a surprising amount of restaurants there, or head to the beach! There are several nice beaches to chill at.
If you’re staying around the Sveti Naum area, Trpejca Beach or Ljubaništa Beach are both great. Going back to Ohrid? Potpesh Beach or Kaneo Beach are right in the city. Have a cocktail at the little bar and enjoy the sunshine!
Evening
To keep your relaxed vibes, head for pre-dinner cocktails at Noa Lounge Bar. They have a lakeside patio out back, and we loved their espresso martinis!
Up for a fancy dinner? Head to restaurant Kajce on the waterfront. Something a little more traditional? Vkushno Kebap is the best in town! Very budget friendly also.
After dinner, have a drink at Jazz Inn before turning in; a nice local bar with often live music.

Day 3 – hiking & local life
Morning
Ohrid is located right by Galicica National Park. There are multiple fabulous hikes here, and if you’re not up for hiking, it’s definitely worth it to rent a car for the day and explore it driving. We will recommend you this hike that is doable for all levels (you could do half of it and still get the views) and offers a beautiful view of lake Ohrid.
This hike is called Old Radar Station Loop in Komoot and is around 4km round trip with an elevation of 400 meters. We took about 2 and a half hours total, because I’m slow and we took some time at the top!
A perfect stop for lunch would be restaurant Velestovo.
→ Or explore Galicica with an ATV!
Afternoon
After a bit of a rest, head to Ohrid’s bazar to get some souvenirs (or pearls!) and consider visiting the National Workshop for Handmade Paper. We family that runs this also owned our AirBnB, and we loved them! They own one of two Gutenberg presses in the world, and will show you the process of making paper. They also sell beautiful handmade prints of Ohrid.
Evening
For your last evening, have a dinner at a lakeside restaurant of your choice, and don’t leave without having tasted the local rakija! There are many varieties, but the yellow version is better than the white (clear) and we preferred the plum rakija.

Ohrid like a local: additional tips
There is much more to do in Ohrid, so if the above doesn’t speak to you, maybe some of this will!
- Monastery Winery. Macedonia produces a lot of good wine, of which they’re very proud. We loved (so much that we went 4 times) Monastery Winery immensely. Not only were they incredibly kind: their wines are of excellent quality. They do tastings with food set in a beautiful forest scenery. Come with a taxi because you’ll be guaranteed to leave drunk!
- Utarna Terrasa is a tiny restaurant just outside of Ohrid with gorgeous views, that does really fantastic local food. This one is really worth the (short)trek.
- Vevchani is a village some 20 minutes from Ohrid, where you will find natural springs quite famous in Macedonia. It’s a beautiful location and perfect for a chilly dip to cool off. For a good restaurant with amazing views, head to Kutmichevica.
- At Tino’s Hotel & Spa (not the one on the boulevard but the second one just outside town) you can buy a daypass to use the swimming pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi all day. A steal for €10.

Super
We visited Ohrid last year and were enchanted. What a hidden gem it is. Thanks for the reminder with your gorgeous photos.
Thank you! Glad you loved it 🙂
It would be wonderful to visit this area. Thanks for info and I loved learning about Monastery Wine.
I love discovering smaller towns and villages where you don’t feel like a convention of visitors. This is lovely.
We for sure feel the same!
