North Macedonia is one of those countries where you can see a lot in just a few days.
If you’re visiting for the first time and only have three days, we recommend focusing on Skopje, Matka Canyon, and Ohrid. This route gives you a taste of the country’s history and culture, some beautiful mountain scenery, and time beside the spectacular Lake Ohrid.
You won’t see all of North Macedonia in three days, but you can experience some of its biggest highlights without spending your entire trip on the road!
Here’s exactly how we’d plan it.

Day 1: Skopje
Start your trip in Skopje, North Macedonia’s capital.
You can see the main highlights of the city in one day, making it the perfect starting point for a short itinerary.
Spend your morning exploring the Old Bazaar, then walk across the Stone Bridge towards Macedonia Square. From there, you can see some of the city’s most recognizable monuments before heading up to Skopje Fortress for views across the city.
In the afternoon, take some time to explore whichever parts of central Skopje interest you most before returning to the Old Bazaar for dinner.
Don’t feel like you’ve got to tick off every attraction. Skopje is a city that’s enjoyable to explore on foot, and with only three days in the country, you’ll want to save some energy for the rest of the route.

Day 2: Matka Canyon & Ohrid
Today is your transition from the capital to Lake Ohrid, but there’s a great stop to make along the way.
Morning: Matka Canyon
Head to Matka Canyon, just outside Skopje.
The dramatic canyon is one of the easiest nature escapes from the capital, with steep cliffs, clear water, walking trails, caves, and opportunities for boat trips.
You don’t need a full day here. I’d allow around 2–4 hours, depending on whether you want to hike or take a boat trip.
Then continue south towards Ohrid.
Afternoon & Evening: Ohrid
The journey from Skopje to Ohrid takes around three hours, so don’t plan a packed sightseeing schedule for your first afternoon.
Once you’ve checked into your hotel, head into Ohrid’s Old Town and spend the rest of the day wandering around. Walk down to the lake, explore the historic streets, stop for coffee, and find somewhere along the waterfront to watch the sunset.
Ohrid has a very different vibe from Skopje, and that’s exactly why I like including both in a short North Macedonia itinerary.
📖 Want to see more of Ohrid? We have a separate 3 Day Itinerary: Exploring Ohrid Like a Local with a much more detailed plan for exploring the town and Lake Ohrid!
Day 3: Ohrid & Lake Ohrid
Use your final day to explore more of Ohrid and Lake Ohrid.
Start with the iconic Church of St. John at Kaneo, perched above the lake. From there, wander through the Old Town and make your way up to Samuel’s Fortress for panoramic views over Ohrid and the lake. After seeing the main sights, slow down for the afternoon.
Have lunch, walk along the waterfront, or find a spot by the lake to relax. If you’re visiting during summer, you can also spend some time swimming!
Have a car?
You could use part of your afternoon to visit Sveti Naum, near the Albanian border. There are plenty of day trips as well if you’re not driving!
It’s one of the most popular excursions from Ohrid and a beautiful place to add if you want to see more of the lake. If you prefer slow travel, I’d stay in Ohrid and enjoy the lake rather than trying to squeeze one more attraction into your final day.
How to Get Around North Macedonia
This itinerary is easiest with a rental car, especially if you want to visit Matka Canyon and Sveti Naum. A car also makes sense if you’re continuing your trip through the Balkans afterwards. However, you can easily do this itinerary without one!
There are direct buses between Skopje and Ohrid, with the journey taking roughly three hours. Matka Canyon is the part that requires a little more planning, as you’ll need to use local transportation or a taxi from Skopje.
For such a short trip, I’d choose based on your overall Balkan itinerary rather than renting a car specifically for these three days.

Is 3 Days Enough for North Macedonia?
Three days is enough for a first taste of North Macedonia, but not enough to see the whole country. Skopje gives you the country’s capital and cultural side. Matka Canyon adds nature, while Ohrid gives you the beautiful lake and historic old town.
Trying to add Bitola, Mavrovo, and several other stops would turn this into a road-trip checklist rather than an enjoyable three-day trip.
If you have more time, slow down rather than simply adding more places.
Have More Than 3 Days?
If you can extend your trip, you have several good options.
Spend More Time Around Lake Ohrid
This would be my first choice! With another day or two, you can explore more of the lake, visit Sveti Naum, discover some of the smaller lakeside villages, or simply enjoy Ohrid at a slower pace.
Add Bitola
Bitola makes a good addition if you’re interested in history, architecture, and cafés. You can also visit the nearby ancient site of Heraclea Lyncestis.
Explore Pelister National Park
If you enjoy hiking and mountain scenery, add Pelister National Park near Bitola.
Visit Mavrovo National Park
For a completely different side of the country, head north-west to Mavrovo National Park, where you’ll find mountains, forests, hiking trails, and Lake Mavrovo.
When Is the Best Time to Visit North Macedonia?
The best time depends on what you want from the trip.
Summer is ideal if you want warm weather and swimming in Lake Ohrid, but it’s also the busiest period, late spring and early autumn can be a great compromise, with pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists.
If hiking is a priority, spring and autumn can be particularly enjoyable because temperatures are generally more comfortable than in the middle of summer.
3-Day North Macedonia Itinerary FAQ’s
How many days do you need in North Macedonia?
I’d recommend at least 3 days for a first visit, although 5–7 days would allow you to explore at a much slower pace. With more time, you could add Bitola, Pelister National Park, Mavrovo, or spend longer around Lake Ohrid.
Is Skopje or Ohrid better?
They offer very different experiences, so I’d include both if you have three days. Skopje is better for history, culture, and city life, while Ohrid is the place to go for the lake, historic Old Town, and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Is North Macedonia expensive to visit?
North Macedonia is generally one of the more affordable countries in the Balkans. Accommodation, food, and transportation tend to be considerably cheaper than in many popular Western European destinations, although prices around Lake Ohrid can be higher during the summer.
Can you visit North Macedonia without a car?
Yes. Skopje and Ohrid are connected by bus, and you can visit both without renting a car. A car does make the itinerary easier, particularly if you want to visit Matka Canyon and Sveti Naum or continue your Balkan road trip afterwards.

It looks absolutely amazing! I have never thought of visiting North Macedonia but now it’s on my list!
North Macedonia looks like a wonderful destination. I think we’d want to stay for 1 week or more, to take advantage of the national parks and spend more time on Lake Ohrid.
