Both Krabi and Phuket sit on Thailand’s Andaman coast, just a couple of hours apart. Both have the turquoise water, the limestone scenery, the boat trips and the pad thai. And yet, they feel completely different. We’ve spent serious time in both: a full month in Phuket earlier this year, and a month based in Ao Nang (Krabi province). So when the Krabi vs Phuket question comes up, we actually have something to say about it.
The short version: neither is better. But one of them is probably better for you.
What are we comparing?
A quick clarification before we dive in: when most people say “Krabi,” they usually mean the Krabi province; which includes the town of Ao Nang, the beaches of Railay, the island of Koh Lanta, and a handful of other spots. Krabi town itself is mostly a transit hub. For the purposes of this post, we’ll focus on Ao Nang as the main base, since that’s where most visitors end up.
Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and one of the most visited destinations in all of Southeast Asia. It has its own international airport, a developed infrastructure, and everything from backpacker guesthouses to ultra-luxury resorts. Krabi is smaller, a tad quieter, and a little rougher around the edges.

How to get to Krabi and Phuket
Phuket wins on accessibility. Flights from Bangkok take about an hour and a half, and there are direct connections from a huge number of international cities. Arriving is easy and the infrastructure makes onward travel simple.
Krabi has its own airport too, which is smaller but well connected to Bangkok and major regional hubs. From Krabi airport, Ao Nang is about 15 minutes away. If you’re already in southern Thailand, 12Go is the most reliable way to figure out transport options between the two provinces, whether that’s a ferry, a minivan, or a bus.
Ferries from Phuket to Krabi (and vice versa)
There are multiple ferries a day, form multiple piers. Laem Hin pier north of Phuket old town is the easiest to reach, but there are departures from Rassada and Bang Rong piers as well. Most ferries frop you off at Nopparat Thara pier in Ao Nang, some go directly to Railay, so check your destination.
This works in reverse as well; ferries depart from Nopparat Thara pier to the above mentioned piers on Phuket. As always; the easiest thing to do is book your tickets through 12Go, where you can even include a hotel pick up if you like.
The vibes: where Krabi vs Phuket really diverges
Phuket is developed. Parts of it are very developed. Patong Beach, which is the most famous and central area, is full of neon lights, loud bars, souvenir stalls and aggressive tour touts. During our month there, we found it a little exhausting, and we’re not easily overwhelmed. It’s convenient and there’s always something to do, but the feeling of being in a tourist machine is hard to shake in certain parts.
That said, Phuket also has quieter corners. Kamala, Karon, and the southern tip of the island are considerably calmer. The old town is quite charming. You just have to work a little harder to find the parts that feel like Thailand and not like a theme park.
Krabi, and Ao Nang specifically, is more relaxed by default. It’s also touristy; we’re not going to pretend Railay Beach is a hidden gem at this point (!) but the scale is different. The main strip in Ao Nang is manageable, the pace is slower, and it’s easier to hop on a scooter and find yourself somewhere quiet within twenty minutes.

Beaches
One of the most common Krabi vs Phuket questions is about the beaches, and honestly, it’s close.
Both areas have beautiful beaches, and both are dotted with the dramatic karst limestone formations that make this corner of Thailand so recognizable.
In Phuket, the west coast beaches (Kata, Karon, Kamala) are broad and pretty, though they can fill up fast in high season. In the south, you’ll find some genuinely secluded spots; Ao Yon, Ya Nui, that most visitors never bother with. The most famous beaches, like Patong, are busy to a degree that makes it hard to actually enjoy the water.
Around Ao Nang, the beaches are more varied and, in our experience, easier to escape on. Klong Muang, about 20 minutes by scooter, was one of our favorites anywhere in Thailand- wide, uncrowded, with a great beach bar. And Railay, while always busy, has Phra Nang Cave Beach, which is spectacular enough to be worth the longtail boat trip even when it’s packed.
Day trips
For day trips, both regions offer excellent options. The Phi Phi Islands are typically accessed from Phuket, and Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island) can be reached from either. From Ao Nang, the four-islands longtail tours are a classic. Both are worth doing but both are also busy, so set your expectations accordingly.

Beyond the beaches
Phuket has more to offer in terms of sheer volume. Old Town, the Big Buddha, cooking classes, Muay Thai; there’s genuinely a lot to fill the days, which makes it particularly good if you’re traveling with people who have different interests.
Krabi province has its own range of activities, but the focus is more nature-oriented. The kayaking through the mangroves at Ao Thalane was one of our highlights, four hours with a small local group, completely different from anything we’d done before. There are caves, hot springs (though we’d skip the main tourist ones), emerald pools, and plenty of hiking. If you want something slower and more exploratory, Krabi delivers.
Where to stay
Accommodation in both areas covers every budget, but the price-to-quality ratio is better in Krabi.
In Phuket, mid-range options around the $40–60 range are decent but often lack the charm factor. The real standouts tend to be either budget hostels or high-end resorts.
In Ao Nang, around that same price point you can find lovely places with pool access in quiet areas. We stayed on Khlong Hang Road and it was ideal; walking distance to everything without being in the middle of the noise.
Planning to continue south? Koh Lanta is a particularly good next stop from Krabi. Quieter still, great for couples, and easy to reach by ferry. We’ve written a full guide to Koh Lanta if you want to read more.

Can you do both?
Yes, and it’s actually a very doable combination if you have two weeks or more. Fly into Phuket, spend a few days there, then head east to Ao Nang and use that as a base for exploring the Krabi region. The journey between the two takes about two hours, and is simple to arrange. You could also flip the order; fly in and out of Krabi and take a day trip to Phuket’s old town for the contrast.
Krabi Vs Phuket: the verdict
If you want ease, infrastructure, and don’t mind the crowds, Phuket is a solid choice. If you want something that feels a little more like the Thailand you probably imagined, Krabi is the one.
We know which we preferred; but we also know we’re not everyone. The best answer is always the one that fits your version of a good trip!
